The Travel Bug Project
Your Passport to Adventure

Students, the race is on!

You will be creating a Travel Bug as well as setting it free to journey from your school to explore the United States as well as other places in the world. Hopefully your Travel Bug will have a chance to explore the USA as well as sending details and pictures of its travels!

What is a Travel Bug?

A Groundspeak Travel Bug is a trackable item that moves from place to place, picking up stories along the way. Here you can add your own story, or live vicariously through each bug's adventures.

A Groundspeak Travel Bug is a trackable tag that you attach to an item. This allows you to track your item on Geocaching.com. The item becomes a hitchhiker that is carried from cache to cache (or person to person) in the real world and you can follow its progress online.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for GPS users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a GPS unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

Special Note:

You don't need to be a Geocacher to do a Travel Bug Project; you'll be able to watch your Travel Bug's journey right from your computer on the Internet.

Find & Design your own Personnel Travel Bug!

Pick a Travel Bug and write a story about it. Whether your story is real or whether you use your imagination, just remember to be creative and have fun!

Decide its Ultimate Mission!

Which places or global features interest you the most? Pick locations that you would like your Travel Bug to ultimately reach and this will be one of the goals the Travel Bug must accomplish. Helpful geocachers will move your Travel Bug closer and closer to the destinations that you've chosen! As part of the project, you will report back to the class on your Travel Bug's progress and share its adventures, what it has seen, and what it has learned along its journey!
